Microsoft Sunsets Windows 10: Raising Concerns About Digital Equity on Campus
Some Windows computers are unable to upgrade to Windows 11 after Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 Oct. 14. If a user does not have hardware that meets certain requirements, they must either buy a new device, pay for extended Windows 10 support, or risk using a computer without security updates.
Microsoft states that there are minimum requirements that a computer has to have to upgrade to ensure the security of the device.
Large technology companies discontinuing old hardware is not a new practice. New software requires stronger hardware. However, recent mandatory upgrades do not make sense to some students.
Senior game and animation art major Jackson Meyer said, “I don’t get why we need new Windows. The updates always make the UI worse. It feels like they’re pushing unnecessary AI stuff.”
Senior computer science major Marcos Garnica said, “honestly, it feels like they’re leaving everyone with well-functioning older computers behind. Not everyone can afford new computers.”
Forcing users to upgrade also raises issues of digital equity among students.
“The updates make unnecessary environmental waste and widen the digital divide,” Garncia added.
Junior Arnold Stein stated, “I had to finally buy a new computer. I don’t like Windows 11. Windows 10 worked. I don’t get why they would trash a perfectly working computer.”
In today’s age, a computer or phone is a near-necessity for life. Jobs require online applications, schools use learning management systems, and a mobile phone is required for two-factor authentication to access online accounts. New devices can be cost-prohibitive, meaning in extreme cases, people will be priced out of opportunities due to a lack of digital access.
For students, Elmhurst University provides digital resources. A.C. Buehler Library houses computers and printers for student use. Additionally, EU’s software discount website, powered by Kivuto Solutions Inc., allows faculty, staff, and students to purchase software at significant discounts off standard retail prices.
