EC set to launch creative makerspace

The Elmhurst College Art Department is debuting a makerspace in Old Main to provide students with a creative studio for design and art.

The makerspace will include a laser printer, a photo printer, and a computer numerical control machine (CNC), which serves to control machining tools and 3D printers through a computer.

“[The space] definitely opens up new possibilities with sculpture and printmaking,” said Dustan Creech, chair of the Art Department.

Installation for the space began in May and was continued throughout the summer. The project was funded by Sally and Ray Allen, longtime donors of EC who support the art community on campus.

"[The space] will continue to make the art department more communal,” says Maria Romero Luther, art major and president of the art club.

The EC makerspace will be the second one accessible to students given that the Elmhurst Public Library also has a makerspace open to EC students as well as Elmhurst residents.

Before the space is unveiled to the campus on November 1, graphic design students will be creating a mural for display in the studio.
