Superheaven Breaks Back Into the Scene
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, post-grunge/shoegaze band Superheaven released their first song in nine long years called “Long Gone.” The song is part of a double single, with the other half, “Numb To What is Real,” scheduled for a December release.
The rollout started a day in advance when the band cleared their socials of all prior content, changed their profile picture, posted a website link with a countdown, and teased the “Long Gone” music video with a short clip that linked a working phone number which can be texted for updates.
These songs will be the first release of the band since 2015’s Ours is Chrome, the worthy successor to their breakout debut album Jar, released in 2013. Although Superheaven has been on a release hiatus for years, the band was far from dormant this past decade. Touring around the country and world has been a clear priority for the band, as have the various other groups that the members are involved with.
The band’s popularity has not declined or staggered at all since their last album; in fact, an extreme amount of hype has been accumulated around them ever since. In the past two years alone, their biggest hit, entitled “Youngest Daughter” from Jar, has blown up on TikTok and other social media platforms. Earning the band over 100 million streams on that song alone and interest from many new fans resulted in over 2.5 million listeners monthly on Spotify. Younger fans, in particular, those who missed out on the band’s releases in the 2010s, have flocked to their sound and held out hope for new music.
Thankfully, this hope paid off. Along with this year’s double single, Superheaven announced in an interview that their third album will be released sometime in 2025, and it will likely not be their last. Superheaven managed not only to make its mark on the scene once a decade ago but has done it again with the help of consistent fans and new, younger audiences.
To celebrate their return, they released an exclusive merch drop for the songs, which includes two graphic tees and two 7” vinyl variants, one of which has already sold out within two days. You can catch Superheaven live on their current U.S. tour opening for alternative emo band The Story So Far. Fans, including myself, are grateful to see the return of Superheaven and eagerly await for anything new coming our way.
