Hate speech found in Niebuhr Hall bathroom
Elmhurst city police and campus security responded to homophobic and racist slurs written on the mirrors of the 2nd floor Niebuhr Hall bathroom Monday evening.
Somebody went into the bathroom and wrote, with what appears to be red lipstick, “No gays/lesbians allowed”, “KKK bitches”, and a six-point star with the number 666 written around it, according to a Snapchat video posted by Acqueira Curry.
Curry, a freshman who lives in Niebuhr, said via text message, “Disgusted; it’s just childish and inconsiderate of those who’s a part of the LGBT community.”
Police and campus security officers were in the bathroom investigating the writing with students while residents sat in the hallway outside the bathroom.
Students have expressed concern about the actions of their peers threatening the diversity on campus.
“It is unbelievable that there’s still people out there especially at Elmhurst College, which actively reminds students that we’re all about diversity and inclusion” said Sarahi Gama, a freshman in Niebuhr, “I’m very disappointed, and I don’t feel safe here anymore.”
Elmhurst Police declined The Leader’s request for comment.
This is following a recent instance of hate speech on campus, which The Leader reported a Neo-Nazi sticker found on campus on September 23.
