Dear Leader Reader,

I, on behalf of all of us here at Elmhurst University’s student-run newspaper, The Leader, would like to welcome you to campus. Whether you are an incoming student or on the last round of your college journey, I hope the 2022-2023 school year is one to remember.

Last year around this time I was new to EU as a transfer student, unsure of what was in store for me stepping onto a college campus for the first time in over a year. Looking back, this anxiety only drove me to find my place on campus, and now here I am leading a college newspaper.

There is no easy way to create a how-to-survive college guide, but with our special Orientation Issue, I hope the stories and graphics that we have created for you gives some insight on how to make your time at EU memorable.

I view college as a game. Random decisions, in or out of your control, determine just how your college experience plays out. Taking inspiration from one of my favorite childhood board games, Monopoly, The Leader is now your rulebook on how to play the game of college.

I hope this issue grabs your attention, as it has been a labor of love between all of us here at The Leader. We worked hard over the summer on this issue, spending countless nights studying Monopoly boards to provide this issue for you.

Hopefully, this is not goodbye and you will continue picking up issues of The Leader throughout your time here at EU.

I want to leave you with one question to ponder: college is a game, are you ready to play it?

Happy Reading!

Ryan Windle (they/he)
