Beyond the Rally: Three Men Arrested at Elmhurst “No Kings” Protest

In the midst of the Elmhurst “No Kings” protest on Saturday, Oct. 18, which The Leader previously reported on, three men were arrested on serious charges related to the impersonation of a peace officer and the unlawful possession of ammunition.

While the crowd was chanting and marching around downtown Elmhurst, off in one corner, Jonathan Capp, 22, of Wheaton; Andrew Knight, 24, of Darien; and Cole Sarros, 26, of Woodridge were taken into custody by Elmhurst police officers.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean confirmed the charges in an Oct. 20 press release.

All three men are being charged with a Class 4 felony for conspiring to impersonate a peace officer, as they allegedly all agreed to attend the No Kings protest with tactical vests and masks.

Additionally, the men are each facing a misdemeanor for possession of ammunition without a FOID (Firearms Owner Identification) card, as they allegedly carried 9 mm and .223 caliber ammunition.

Responding authorities said that Capp was carrying an airsoft rifle and a handgun without the proper orange safety tips. A search of the men’s vehicle was warranted, and flash-bangs and lighter fluid were uncovered inside.

All three individuals were released pre-trial as the offenses were deemed non-detainable. They are now scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.

The motivation and intent behind the three men’s actions are still unknown as the trial approaches.
