Six Budget-Friendly, Screenless Activities To Do This Summer

Published by Eve Hvarre on May 13, 2025

Summer is approaching and the semester is quickly coming to an end. While many are excited for the break and the free time, there are those who find themselves falling victim to the constant doom-scrolling and screen addiction each summer.

Here are six screenless, budget-friendly hobbies and activities to try this summer to give yourself a break from that harsh blue light:

Go for a walk.

The idea of going for a walk may seem boring at first, but it can actually be quite enjoyable. It’s the perfect opportunity to listen to some music, listen to your favorite podcasts, or maybe even pick up an audiobook. Going for a walk each day, whether it’s outside or on the treadmill, can have positive benefits on both one’s physical and mental health.

Do a puzzle or color.

Puzzles and coloring books can be very relaxing. Just like walking, these are also wonderful opportunities to listen to your favorite things while relaxing and watching the pictures come together before you. Many libraries actually rent out puzzles, so no purchase is necessary!

Try out a new recipe.

Summer is the perfect time to try out new cooking or baking recipes. For friends, family, or just yourself, exploring new recipes can be fun, nutritious, and delicious!

Read a book or graphic novel.

Enjoy reading? Summer is a great time to read some of those unread books you own or to take advantage of your local library. Libraries have all sorts of books, graphic novels, and audiobooks available for their communities.

Pick up a new sport.

Want to spend more time being active? Try picking up a sport! Sports are a great way to stay active while also having fun exploring different activities. They are also a good opportunity to get together with friends and family. Basketball, tennis, golf, many sports can be played both solo and with others.

Go through your closet.

Almost everyone pushes off going through their closet at some point. Summer is a great time to go through those clothes and other belongings that haven’t been touched in months or even years. You probably don’t need to keep that shirt from high school that hasn’t been worn since you were 15.

Summer is the time to try new things and get out and about before the school year starts up again and the never-ending screentime takes over once more. Technology has taken up the daily lives of many people, and spending hours and hours glued to a screen isn’t healthy. So, set that phone or laptop down from time to time this summer and enjoy a break from the technology.
