‘The Day The Earth Blew Up’: A Heartwarming Return To Form

The first all-animated Looney Tunes feature film (not a hybrid), “The Day The Earth Blew Up,” directed by Peter Browngardt, was fantastic. Animation-wise, I love how the style is a rich blend of both the original Looney Tunes style and modern effects. As someone who dearly misses hand-drawn animation, this was great to see.
Story-wise, the writers nailed it. The film is a very emotional story, with some funny parts for sure, but they balance it out with the more serious stuff, like the first SpongeBob Movie. A heartfelt and exciting story, rather than comedy, is the main focus, but there is still some great comedy.
Daffy Duck and Porky Pig are the stars here, and they have great chemistry. There is also a clever twist with the villain, which I won’t spoil, let’s just say I legit didn’t see it coming. It was one of those moments where you think the movie is almost over, and then you realize we still have a little more to go, and the way it was done was very engaging because it was completely unexpected.
In this current age of bringing back old properties to modernize them, this movie in my opinion ranks with films like “The Muppets” (2011) and “The Force Awakens.” So many films in this category today feel manipulative and like obvious cash grabs with little to no effort or heart, but this is not one of them. There’s love and soul put into it, a clear passion, and it feels genuine–like the writers took their audience seriously rather than just putting out some run-of-the-mill “kids” film.
Anyone who loves Looney Tunes is sure to enjoy this movie, or for those who have never seen Looney Tunes (let’s face it, that’s not very many, since even those who weren’t obsessed as kids, per say, have still very likely seen them at some point), it wouldn’t be a bad introduction to these characters. A real winner in my book.
