Chicago Bears Off to a Great Start With 4-2 Record
On Sunday, Oct. 13, the Chicago Bears went to the Tottenham Stadium in London, England to face the Jaguars-and it was a rookie who hogged the spotlight.
Before the event, there was the possibility of the team being down two starting defensive backs. Jaquan Brisker, the Bear’s safety, was ruled out of that game due to a concussion in the Oct. 6 game where they beat the Panthers.
Tryique Stevenson was initially listed as doubtful after a calf injury from a Thursday workout prevented him from practicing the next day.
“It was just a plant, point and drive,” said coach Matt Eberflus. “He felt something in his calf. We took him out of practice there. He’s been rehabbing it the last so many hours since it happened, and we’ll see where it goes.”
Elijah Hicks was initially expected to replace Brisker. “Hicks has appeared in 37 games with eight starts in three seasons, compiling 68 tackles, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Six of his starts came last season in place of the injured Eddie Jackson.”
Defensive coordinator Eric Washington has stated that he has incredible confidence in Hicks.
Against the Jaguars, the Bears had a tremendous win of 35-16, however, Stevenson did not play in the game, while Elijah Hicks was Brisker’s replacement as expected.
However, the Bears’ rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was the real star. “Williams was the standout figure in Sunday’s showing, completing 23-of-29 passes for 226 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He added four carries and 56 yards on the ground, showcasing a part of his game that hasn’t quite landed on the marquees at this point in his big-league career.”
He was one of a few Bears talents to show out in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The same statement could apply to Keenan Allen (five catches, 41 yards, two touchdowns) and D’Andre Swift (17 carries, 91 yards, one touchdown).
Cole Kmet was Chicago’s leading receiver and snagged two TD catches of his own. He also served as the Bears’ long-snapper after the team’s go-to guy, Scott Daly, left the match due to injury.
Likewise, the Bears had a pretty disappointing defense in this game, as they were only able to accomplish two turnovers, and the Jaguars’ quarterback, Trevor Lawrence was held to only two touchdowns. Lawrence was the number one pick for the 2021 NFL draft, while Williams was the number one pick for this year’s draft.
This was only his sixth appearance and his career looks strong given this performance. He threw four touchdown passes, helping the team to their third straight win resulting in an improved 4-2 record.
Given these details, this player just might be what this team needs to get out of their losing streak. This game is one to remember, and it’s in large part due to this super-talented rookie.
