Bluejay Sports Corner: Women’s Golf and Soccer
Women’s Golf:
Elmhurst University’s Women’s Golf team kicked off its season opener at the Carthage Battle on the Border this weekend. Riding the swing of Elise Nelson, a sophomore, who placed 12th out of 109 individual players, shooting 655 (+17) in 2 rounds.
Also helping lead the Jays in their season opener, Regan Bobich, a senior, tied for 13th place while shooting 162 (+18) through 2 rounds.
Elmhurst Bluejays’ two leading scorers helped propel the Jays into 4th place out of an 18-team field, with a total team score of 665 (+89) through two rounds.
Looking ahead, the Women’s Golf Team will go for gold next Tuesday, September 17, at the Benedictine Fall Invite in West Chicago, III.
Men’s Soccer:
Bluejays’ Men’s Soccer rang the bell at Langhorst field, taking down Lakeland University 2-0 in their season opener this past Friday, August 30, with a strong surge of offense in the first 15 minutes where both goals were scored.
The first Jay to strike was Graduate Student Brady Lucas in the 11th minute, assisted by Maciej Rzadkosz. The second goal came in the 15th minute through freshman Ryan Nguyen, assisted by Jacob Wipke. Accompanied by seven saves from goalkeeper Nieyen Ruffin, a sophomore, who helped shut out the Muskies.
Men’s Soccer had a quick turnaround as they hopped on the road to battle against the Spartans of Aurora University. The game was controlled by both defenses as the first goal was scored in the 84th minute by the Spartans.
As the game went on the Jays were looking closely at their first loss of the year, when the 89th minute rolled around, and Junior Caden Sultzbaugh found the net tying it late in the game. Both defenses held their own for the rest of the match ending in a 1-1 tie.
The Jays (1-0-1) now look to pick up another win against Beloit College this Friday, September 13 at 4 p.m. in Wisconsin.
Women’s Soccer:
Bluejays’ Women’s Soccer team took on the Lake Forest Foresters on home turf. Langhorst Field saw a lot of action as the game tallied up four total goals.
Lake Forest scored two goals, both within the first 40 minutes of the game, taking a commanding 2-0 lead against the Jays.
However, our Jays fought back by scoring two goals of their own. Both came from the foot of Lauren Nevins, a sophomore, in her Elmhurst Debut. The score held up for the rest of the match as the Jays tied their season opener.
As the Jays looked to pick up their first win of the year, the Eagles came into town.
The Jays started off hot, scoring three goals in the first half. Coming off a great game, Nevins finds the net again to tie it at 1.
Not long later, Ellie Muscarello, a sophomore, found the back of the net for her first goal of the year, propelling the Jays to a 2-1 lead.
The scoring did not stop. Katelyn Guolla, a freshman, was able to draw a penalty kick, and Kelli Coughlin, a sophomore, was able to take advantage and score for the Jays for the third time.
It did not end there as Guolla picked up her first goal as a Jay in the 62nd minute.
The Jays were able to hold off the Eagles and ring that bell for the first win of the season.
Cheer them on; their next game is this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., against Aurora University at their homebase.
