Janelle Monáe stuns with her Oscars opening performance

Published by Jenna Pederson on February 19, 2020

While the Oscars are still fresh in our minds, can we take a second to appreciate the beauty in the opening act? Janelle Monáe opened the show in her incredible Mr. Rogers outfit. It was the throw back we didn’t know we needed (or is that just me?).

She began by singing “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood '' wonderfully, interacting with the crowd throughout her act. Then the bass dropped, and she lost her red cardigan.

Now it’s time to appreciate those backup dancers. They were dressed in costumes to reflect movies that got snubbed such as“Us”, “Dolemite Is My Name”, and “Queen & Slim”. She also included costumes to films that got recognition like “Joker” and “1917”.

Throughout this half of the act, Monáe’s song had an upbeat feel, which got her audience into it. Monáe put on a vibrant flower poncho before taking to the crowd, asking them to sing and snap along to her fun beat.

The high energy, sheer talent, and bright outfits really made this act.
