EC policy unaffected by the legalization of recreational marijuana
The Office of Student Affairs sent out an email on Monday, Feb. 3, detailing the zero tolerance policy regarding the state wide legalization of recreational marijuana on Jan. 1.
The email states, "Cannabis, marijuana, marijuana-infused products, and marijuana paraphernalia are not permitted in or on any Elmhurst College property."
Illinois law states private property owners reserve the right to prohibit the possession and/or use of marijuana on their land. This includes institutions such as Elmhurst College, where the zero tolerance policy is maintained and remains unaffected.
EC chose to not make any changes to their policy because of how the school would be impacted by federal regulations currently in place.
Jennifer Duffield, assistant dean of students and Title IX coordinator, explained the consequences of EC allowing marijuana on campus.
Marijuana, even for medical use, is still illegal under federal law. Elmhurst College receives federal funding and therefore must abide by federal law," Duffield stated.
The changes made under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act states if purchased from a licensed buyer, one is allowed to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis at any given time but should refrain from using it in most public places.
