EC student raises disability awareness
Dear Editor,
Hey you!
Yeah you, the one who just looked away; trying not to make eye contact. I’m over here! Behind you, a little to your left, perfect! Now, where to begin?
My name is Matt McKenna, I am a third year here at Elmhurst; a regular guy just like everyone else. My interests include playing video games, watching TV and listening to music. I have done Improv, Stand Up & Sketch comedy.
Do I seem that different to you? Not really; honestly a lot of college students have the same interests. That is not to say we are all the same, but we can all go out and have a good time together.
Oh yes, and something I forgot to mention; I have Cerebral Palsy (CP) which in my case, it makes it harder for me to walk than others. I use a walker and cannot walk long distances. However, as I clearly indicated above, that does not stop me from doing anything. How, you may be asking yourself? Well let me tell you by typing words.
I use a powerchair as well as, Uber and getting rides from friends to go to movies, games, concerts, parties, bars; things we all like to do. So, yes, I am independent! I just do things in a different way than most.
I want you to understand that I want to get out and be with friends, just like you. Unfortunately, I feel very isolated at Elmhurst and I seem to end up being alone in my room most of the time. I just want to hang out and have fun like everyone else.
Just as all Catholics are not the same or all Italians, or tall people, etc. all disabled people are not the same. Just like you, we want to be part of a community. I have some funny stories about accessibility and double standards. I am sure many of you have tales because of your differences.
So, let’s get together and swap stories; it could be a lot of fun. And the next time you see me walking around campus, or at the library or cafeteria; just come up and say hi, we may end up being friends
Sincerely,
Matt McKenna
