Director of Athletic Communications Begins New Career at Marquette U

Published by Ian Murphy on November 4, 2025

Matthew Haufe, Elmhurst University’s former director of athletic communications, left EU in October to begin a new position as assistant director of communications for volleyball, women’s lacrosse, and track & field at Marquette University.

Haufe joined EU athletics Nov. 7, 2022 and managed external communications for all varsity teams on campus, as well as managing various student employee positions related to athletic communications.

Graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, sport, tourism in 2020 and a masters in sports management in 2022, Haufe worked as a graduate assistant for UIUC before joining EU full time.

According to MU’s athletics website, Haufe joined their staff in October, though neither MU or EU made an official announcement regarding the change. Reasoning behind Haufe’s decision to leave EU or join MU has not been disclosed.

Shawna Armstrong, assistant director of athletics, and Lorrie Decker, athletic communications graduate assistant, are filling in the majority of Haufe’s duties while EU searches for a new candidate for the position.

Decker declined to comment on the situation, citing a lack of availability from her during the search for a new director of athletic communications.

Dr. Glen Brittich, director of athletics at EU, stated, “we wish Matt Haufe all the best in his future endeavors, and thank him for his service to Elmhurst.”

Desiree Chen, senior director of communications and external relations at EU, noted that Brittich did not wish to comment further on EU’s search for a new director. A request for interview from The Leader was not responded to.

Haufe did not respond to requests for comment or interview.
