Study Music Recommendations: Bluejays Weigh In
There are a few things you will never catch a college student without; the most important is a pair of headphones. Throughout campus, students can often be seen wearing a pair of headphones and listening to music. The most universal time students wear headphones is when studying or doing homework. So, what are EU students listening to while studying?
I reached out to fellow students via Snapchat to ask them what kind of music they listen to while studying, and there was a wide variety of responses. From alternative to rock to pop to R&B and classical, regardless of what genre students are listening to, they all have the common goal of making studying more enjoyable and improving their focus.
Mia Merrell, a senior music business major, explained why she listens to Lofi’s music to improve her studies. “It doesn’t have words, so it isn’t distracting. It’s similar to coffee house music when it is just background music.”
This is a common mentality among EU students; they want to listen to music that isn’t distracting and allows them to focus solely on their work.
Business Admin and Criminal Justice major, Tim Dudasik’s music of choice is grunge and rock music. “I don’t know if it’s the type of music I listen to that helps. I think it’s more music in general,” Dudasik explained. “As long as you’re listening to something you enjoy I believe it helps to center your focus and prevent your mind from wandering.”
Sophomore Dominick Tamburello felt similar to this; he said, “I listen to either instrumentals or Frank Ocean and similar artists while studying. I think music is helpful while I study because it allows me to drown out everything around me and focus.”
Some students even prefer to listen to music that has no lyrics at all as a way to eliminate the distraction that comes with lyrics.
“I usually listen to LoFi when doing homework,” Sophomore Hannah Jacob said. “It’s basically coffee shop music and has no words! It’s helpful to my studying because I only listen to it when studying so I am able to associate that with homework.”
Every student has a unique strategy for studying and getting homework done, and music is a common tool used to optimize their success in the classroom.
We are never taught exactly how to study; that is something we have to learn individually, so get your headphones out and try some of your fellow students’ recommendations!
