EDITORIAL: Find your new home with The Leader
There are many risks that one can take during college. Joining a new club or taking a class outside of your comfort zone can be one of the scariest experiences, but in the end the reward is worth it.
Even if your personal college game plan does not seem to include The Leader, once you alter your game route to play with us, you will want to stay on the path of having an impact on campus life.
The Leader is open to anyone on campus, you do not have to be a journalism or English major to join. The group of students who dedicate their time to providing hard hitting news for the campus is not defined by their majors, but instead it is defined by the passion they have to create something memorable.
The Leader is student-run, meaning that this is an open forum for you, an Elmhurst University student, to share your opinions or report on something that you believe needs more attention without any faculty members in your way. The Leader can be the gateway to get the campus talking about something new, something fresh, and something that you have created.
One of the main ways you have seen students get their voices out is through their writing, but if writing is not your forte, there are still numerous elements of The Leader that will help you in your reporting. This includes graphic design, editing, social media or business management, videos, and podcasts.
Our silent heroes here at The Leader are our copy editors. If you are more behind the scenes and love to edit grammar, the team will welcome you with open arms. If your college character has graphic design as their passion, our graphics team is looking to expand with more illustrations and graphics needed to help build the impact of a story.
As well as in-print content, we are broadening our horizons to digital reporting through multimedia elements, such as video recordings and podcasts.
The Leader will be flexible with you and your time. Whenever you want to pop in and participate, we will welcome your ideas with open arms. If there is an occasion where you would like to write something for us just once, you can write a letter to the editor.
Even if you cannot make our meetings, you still can participate in The Leader. Some of our best writers have never stepped foot into a meeting, yet they still produce sustainable content that hits hard, all while communicating through email.
You will not instantly cash in when you start, you will need to play a couple of rounds before you feel that the work you are putting in means something. However, the truth is your opinions and stories matter, and there is someone out there that needs to read them.
Nothing beats seeing an issue in print and being able to cherish your hard work and share it with everyone you know. Looking through all of your work as it evolves will only make you feel proud of yourself and the decision that you made to join The Leader.
If you ever need assistance we have the best editors on campus, and our adviser is a hardworking journalist who is willing to share his expertise.The Leader is notorious for assisting students with their job searches, so putting an award winning paper on your resume will show employers the hard work and dedication that you have.
If this game, the campus’s beloved newspaper, sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to roll the dice and start your journey with us. Our first meeting will be on Aug. 30 in Old Main 107 during protected hour (new students, that’s 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.).
