More racial slurs discovered in Niebuhr Hall
Additional racial slurs involving the N-word were uncovered this afternoon in the showers of a 2nd floor Niebuhr Hall bathroom, according to student reports.
The report comes a day after homphobic and racial slurs, such as “KKK bitches” and “No gays/lesbians allowed”, were found written on a mirror in the same girls’ bathroom in the dorm.
The Leader received images from a student, who wished to be anonymous, of racial slurs on shower walls that stated,“no n***ers allowed” and “n***as aren’t welcomed.”
Responding to the incident, Elmhurst Police Department (EPD) arrived on the scene along with campus security. The EPD declined to comment to The Leader.
President Troy VanAken sent out a campus wide email regarding the two hate incidents.
“We are taking these incidents seriously, as we would regarding any threat to our students’ safety and well being,” he wrote.
The Bias Incident and Report Team, the newly formed unit tasked with addressing all hate incidents on campus, also sent an email detailing the incidents.
“Investigations into this incident are ongoing,” the team explained.
Students have expressed their anger with the situation.
Jamie Pressley, the Niebuhr resident who discovered and reported the October 21 incident, expressed anger towards the derogatory messages in the bathroom.
“As much as I hate to believe that these people exist, they do,” said Pressley. “I’m sure this isn’t the last time many of us will be exposed to this kind of rancid behavior.”
