BREAKING: Shelter-in-place issued after armed individual reported on campus

An EU alert sent out on Wednesday afternoon at 3:36 p.m. notified students and staff of an armed person near Dinkmeyer residence hall. Police were notified. 

A second alert was distributed at 4:06 p.m. and noted that the suspect had been seen near Niebuhr Hall. According to another text alert at 4:17 p.m., police are currently investigating the scene. 

There have been no reports of shots fired on campus.

A temporary lockdown has been issued, according to a message posted on the university site. All individuals are encouraged to seek shelter in a “locked room” until an all-clear is given. 

EU campus security and Elmhurst PD declined to comment.

UPDATE: An update sent out at 4:39 p.m. stated that officers from the Elmhurst Police Department are actively searching campus buildings. Students should remain in lockdown as the investigation continues, according to university officials. 

UPDATE: A heavy police presence, including helicopters and armed officers, has been observed on campus grounds. Law enforcement is inspecting buildings for signs of the suspect.

UPDATE: U.S. Congressman Sean Casten quoted a tweet from an NBC Sky reporter about the incident saying, “Please stay safe everyone.” 

UPDATE: At 6:01 p.m. an all-clear was confirmed from university officials and the campus lockdown was lifted. No suspect was apprehended. Additional details were not included.
